Fields

I invite you to walk into these spaces. Feel the stubble of wheat beneath your feet. Touch the roughness of the rolled hay. Smell the dry warm air of a newly baled field on a sunny day. See the beauty of light and shadow on the colors of the sky, clouds, trees, and ground. Listen to the sound of the breeze moving the leaves and birdsong in the trees.

Rapeseed Fields

I painted these fields of yellow flowers, whose seeds produce canola oil, on location on windy April days. Ever moving cumulus clouds activate the sky as the glorious sunlight creates patterns of light and shadow on the field. The joyous yellow gave me a great feeling of hope, while the blustery wind challenged my painting skills and easel stability. In the studio, I recreated my response to the fields in two larger-scale pieces entitled Glory and Hope, in which I celebrate the glory of creation and human’s interaction with it through agriculture and the hope of finding one’s way through challenging life experiences. I look forward to returning to this subject again.
